If you have been thinking about becoming a teacher, perhaps now is a good time to consider the tremendous fulfilment and satisfaction that is a part of teaching, and the many opportunities teachers have to make a positive difference in the lives of children and young adults.

Wesley Institute offers a Graduate Diploma in Education for graduates wanting to undertake primary or secondary teacher education. Below are links to more information.

The course is written from a Christian worldview perspective and prepares generalist primary teachers or specialist secondary teachers to teach in independent and state schools and, in particular, Christian schools.

FEE-HELP is available for eligible students.

Secondary Teaching Methods

The areas of study for secondary teaching include:

  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • English
  • History
  • Commerce/Business Studies
  • Geography
  • Studies of Religion
  • Music
  • Drama
  • Dance
  • French

Biblical Studies is a required area of study for both primary and secondary programs.

Distance Education

Beginning with a compulsory three day orientation which takes place on-campus, the course is delivered via distance education. Students receive their course materials on CD and interact through an online program called WI Online, which is introduced during orientation.

The field experience (practicum) is normally undertaken in schools in the area in which the pre-service teacher lives.

Please Note: Under current DIMIA regulations, distance education courses are not available to international students.

The Head of Education, Pam Harvey, would be happy to talk with you. Please phone 1800 006 555 or email pam.harvey@wi.edu.au.
